A Brief History About The Department of Petroleum Resources – DPR
The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has a rich history. It was originally part of the Ministry of Mines and Power before becoming a Ministry called the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. The merger of the Ministry and the Nigerian National Oil Corporation led to the formation of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Within the NNPC, the Petroleum Inspectorate was created to regulate the petroleum industry. Eventually, the Petroleum Inspectorate was transferred back to the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and renamed as the DPR, which remains its technical arm till today.
The Ministry of Petroleum Resources was re-established, but the Petroleum Inspectorate remained within the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation until March 1988 when the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation was re-organized. By this re-organization, the Petroleum Inspectorate was excised from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, and transferred to the Ministry of Petroleum Resources as the Technical arm and renamed the DPR.
