The Federal Government to Create 2.5 Million Jobs Through the Labour Employment Enhancement Programme (LEEP)
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a new initiative, the Labour Employment Enhancement Programme (LEEP), aimed at creating 2.5 million jobs for Nigerians. The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mrs Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, revealed this during a ceremony in Abuja.
Objectives of LEEP
Mrs. Onyejeocha highlighted the importance of equipping the workforce with essential tools to succeed in the global landscape. The LEEP initiative focuses on addressing issues like zero hunger, zero poverty, economic growth, and the promotion of decent jobs through strategic initiatives.
The goal of LEEP is to train and equip 2.5 million people, with a particular emphasis on tackling youth unemployment in Nigeria. With over 13 million young people currently unemployed, initiatives like LEEP are crucial in providing training, employment opportunities, and entrepreneurial support.
As Nigeria’s unemployment rate continues to rise, standing at 5 percent in the Third Quarter of 2023 according to the National Bureau of Statistics, the unveiling of LEEP signals a comprehensive strategy to address challenges like job creation, skills development, and migration control.
