JAMB Reveals Why It Won’t Announce Names Of 2024 UTME Top Scorer

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) 2024 UTME Top Performers Announcement

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has decided not to disclose the names of the top performers for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This decision was revealed by JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede during a recent press briefing in Bwari.

Preventing Recurrence of ‘Mmesoma Saga’

Prof. Oloyede cited the board’s perspective that the UTME serves primarily as a ranking assessment. This decision stems from the ‘Mmesoma saga’ that occurred after the conclusion of the 2023 UTME. The ‘Mmesoma saga’ involved a student who claimed a high score, but her actual score was different.

Reasons for Not Disclosing Top Performers

With nearly 2 million candidates registering for the examinations, Oloyede emphasized that JAMB’s hesitation to publish top performers’ names is based on the various parameters involved in determining minimum admissible scores for tertiary institution admissions. Each institution has its own set of criteria for admission, making it challenging to establish a universal standard for highest scorers.

Appeal for Verification

While responding to public demand and to prevent a repeat of past incidents, JAMB appeals to all concerned parties to verify claims by candidates before offering any awards or prizes to high-performing candidates.
