About the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship
The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) program is a key initiative of the Mellon Foundation focusing on addressing the underrepresentation among college and university faculties. The program’s name honors Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, a distinguished African-American educator, minister, statesman, and past president of Morehouse College. Initially, the MMUF program included eight member institutions, but it has now expanded to 47 member schools and three consortia, including the UNCF consortium of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Up to now, the MMUF program has produced about 1,100 PhD holders, with nearly 800 serving as college professors and 300 utilizing their humanities training in various fields such as museums, non-profits, publishing houses, and government positions. The program operates through a structured process that emphasizes mentoring, research assistance, specialized programming, and the collective influence of student cohorts.
Fellowship Eligibility Requirements and Criteria
MMUF aims to address the underrepresentation within academia, specifically within humanities and certain social science faculties. To qualify as an MMUF fellow, students must be planning to study in one or more of specific fields such as anthropology, archaeology, area/cultural/ethnic/gender studies, art history, classics, geography, history, literature, performance studies, philosophy, and more. The fellowship is awarded through MMUF member institutions, with fellows generally chosen in the spring of their sophomore year. The main fellowship selection criteria include academic promise, interest in pursuing an academic career, potential for serving as a mentor, dedication to MMUF’s objectives, and U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.
