What expenses does the Opportunity Funds Program actually cover and what is expected of me as a scholar?
The OFP for Nigeria is designed to support academically qualified, low‑income students by covering all initial costs of applying to U.S. universities: this includes standardized test fees (like TOEFL, GRE), application fees (up to eight schools), international passport, visa and SEVIS fees, an outbound flight, and even a settling‑in allowance if available. In rare situations and depending on funding, credential evaluations, transcript mailings, I‑20 shipping, or internet data costs can also be covered. As an OFP scholar, you’re expected to commit significant effort (“sweat equity”), attend monthly advising sessions in Lagos or Abuja from selection through your departure, and give back by mentoring future cohorts or engaging in community service.
Who is eligible to apply for OFP in 2025, and what documents do I need?
Eligible applicants must be Nigerian students from low‑income backgrounds with strong academics, leadership experience, extracurricular involvement and community service. Undergraduate candidates should either be currently in SS3 if WAEC results aren’t yet available or have exam results from May/June WAEC. Students already enrolled in universities are not eligible. Graduate applicants must hold a relevant bachelor’s degree and preferably have a strong GPA (4.5/5.0 or equivalent). Documents required include SS‑level school reports or WAEC result for undergraduates, while graduate applicants provide transcripts, degree certificates or statements, academic CV, supplementary certificates, and GRE scores if applicable.
