Newton International Fellowships for International Researchers

Newton International Fellowships provide researchers with a two-year opportunity to work in a UK institution, fostering long-term international collaborations. The program aims to attract the brightest early-career postdoctoral scholars from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Administrators of the Newton International Fellowships program are the British Academy and the Royal Society.

About Newton International Fellowships

The Newton International Fellowship Scheme was established in 2008 to identify top early-career postdoctoral researchers globally and offer them a chance to work in UK research institutions for two years. These fellowships are available through the British Academy and Royal Society, funded by BEIS.

Aims of the fellowship

The objectives of the Newton International Fellowships program are:

  • Promote the growth and training of postdoctoral researchers from countries outside the UK.
  • Ensure that top postdoctoral researchers from all relevant fields receive support in the UK.
  • Establish an alumni program to strengthen long-term ties between Newton International Fellows and the UK research base.

Eligibility Requirements

The applicant should have a PhD or be in the final stages of their PhD, have less than 7 years of active full-time postdoctoral experience, work outside the UK, not hold UK citizenship, be proficient in spoken and written English, and have a research proposal agreed upon with a UK host researcher.

Value and Duration of Scholarship

Newton International Fellowships last for two years, offering a subsistence cost of £30,000 per annum, consumables support of up to £8,000, and a relocation expense contribution. Dependents’ visas and host institution support are also provided. Visit the official website for more information.
